Homework Assignments

Dear Students,
Start working on your Explorer's power point. You can assign certain slides to be typed by your group members. You can save it on your USB drive and then copy it into one slide show. Group presentations will begin next week Wednesday. These are your assignments for today:

I. Language Arts
a. Read 30 minutes and record pages read.
b. Wordly Wise: 4C and 4D. Write and describe words #8-15. Spelling and Vocabulary test this Thursday.
c. All About Me: (Boys only. I will return my feedback for the girls' stories tomorrow.) Read over my teacher's comments. Today, work on revising your essay by adding more details, correcting spelling or grammar errors. Write out the revised and corrected paragraphs on folder paper. Tomorrow, you can begin typing out your story in final form.

II. Math
a. Mrs. Kaneshiro's group: textbook pages 149 #14-17 (all), page 153 #9-13 (all), and page 197 #15-19 (all).
b. Mrs. Dela Cruz's group: on folder paper, calculate the following problems. Show all work:

III. Social Studies
a. Explorer's project: begin typing your information for your slide show. Follow the criteria sheet as a guide. Oral presentations begin next week Wednesday.

I hope you enjoyed reading the first two chapters of the "Kid Who Ran for President." We will be learning more about Judson Moon and his quest to become the President next week. These are your assignments for today:

Dear Students,
Begin research on your assigned explorer. Use the project sheet to take notes on. Remember to write down the sources that you used on the Bibliography page. These are your assignments for today:

I. Language Arts
a. Read 30 minutes and record pages read. Finish reading your book by this week Friday.

b. Literature sharing folder: complete pages 14-16. For page 14, fill out the information about the genre characteristics on the book you plan to share with your parents. Write down all books read for this month. On page 15, write down the main (important) events that occurred in the story. On the top of page 16, write what you learned from the story (story summary). Due this week Wednesday.

*Over the weekend, read aloud the favorite parts of the book and have your parents write down their comments on the bottom of page 16. Read aloud is due next week Monday.

c. Wordly Wise: Lesson 3A & 3B. Write and describe words #1-7.

II. Math
a. King’s Chessboard: write an explanation on how you got your final answer (how much rice the wise man will receive on Day 65) using labels, patterns and descriptive sentences. For those students who worked in a group, be ready to turn in your group's explanation on a folder paper tomorrow.

*If you were absent today, write your explanation on folder paper and turn it in tomorrow.

III. Social Studies
a. Explorer project: begin research on your assigned explorer. Write down information on the project sheet. Record where you got your information on the Bibliography page. Research due next week Monday.

Over the weekend, look at the Explorer project sheet and select 5 possible explorer's you are interested in researching. You will be selecting a specific explorer on Monday. These are your assignments over the weekend:

a. Reading record/homework folder: read 30 minutes and record pages read. On Sunday, total all pages read for the week. Have parents initial weekly total and sign the homework page for week #3.
b. Wordly Wise: study for Monday's spelling and vocabulary test on Lesson 2.

Finish typing your All About Me story. I will give you more time tomorrow. If you received a pink slip today, please complete the assignment and get your slip signed by a parent. These are your assignments today:

a. Reading Record: Read 30 minutes and record pages read.
b. Reading: complete the S-E-E problem for the Little Mole story.
c. Writing: type your All About Me story. Use the sample as a guide. Type your full name, student number and due date (Wednesday August 19th) in the upper right hand corner.

a. Complete King's Chessboard problem: King’s Chessboard Problem
1) Work out the problem in your chart (in your composition book) up to 9 days after the 16th day.

2) On folder paper, using labels and detailed writing, explain to the superintendant how much rice is being delivered to the wise man and why.

a. Social Studies: finish notes for Lesson 2 pages 10-13. Explain differences between wigwam and longhouses. (Due Wednesday)

Dear Students,
I can't wait to hear your completed All About Me stories. Tonight, please use the criteria sheet as a checklist and self-assess your story. You will not be able to complete all sections of the criteria but make sure your story has all of the necessary parts -- interesting lead, descriptive details about your family, hobbies and future goals. Did you include transitions? Make any necessary revisions.

Tomorrow, a classmate will be giving you feedback on your story. The feedback you receive will help you improve your writing. :) These are your assignments for today:

I. Language Arts
a. Reading record: read 30 minutes and record pages read.

b. Wordly Wise: review and study for tomorrow's spelling and vocabulary exam.

c. All About Me: Finish writing your last 2 paragraphs -- future goals (where you see yourself in 10 years) and the conclusion. Try to relate your conclusion to your lead.

You created interesting leads for your All About Me stories. Tonight, work on writing your first draft. Write the first 3 paragraphs on the project sheet -- the lead (that you selected), share your family background and hobbies. Remember to use descriptive details. These are your assignments for tonight:

a. Reading record: Read 30 mintues and record pages read.
b. Wordly Wise 1E #8-15. Write words 8-15 5x each. Study for tomorrow's practice spelling exam. I will be telling you the definition of the word and you will need to spell the word correctly.
*Friday is your actual spelling and vocabulary exam. For the vocabulary exam, you will need to know the definitions of the words.
c. Writing -- All About Me: write the first 3 paragraphs in your first draft.

II. Math
a. Anno's Magic Seeds -- complete the following 3 problems in your math composition book:
Jack and Alice both ate 1 baked seed. They buried the rest of the seeds in the ground.

I am really glad to see more students using our homework blog. :) Tomorrow, you will be sharing your 2 leads with a classmate for your All About Me story. He or she will be giving you feedback on which lead is more effective. These are your assignments for today:

I. Language Arts
a. Read 30 minutes and record pages read. Make sure you wrote the title of the book you are reading.

b. Wordly Wise: complete 1E problems #1-7. In your Wordly Wise composition book, write words #1-7 (first seven words on page 1) five times each. Start studying for Friday's spelling and vocabulary exam.

c. Journal: write about the study space you selected. Explain your reasons why this is the best place for you to study.

d. Writing -- All About ME: write 2 different leads (beginning for your story). Finish the pre-writing section. Include specific details about each section. Example: hobbies -- baseball. Share how long you have played the sport. What position you play, etc.

II. Math
a. Finish Tropical Storm Felicia poster with your group.

As of 8:00 a.m., Tropical storm Felicia was 450 miles east of Honolulu and is travelling at a speed of 14 mph. Show your work with labels to figure out what day/time Felicia will arrive at Honolulu.

First Day of School

Dear Students,
I hope you enjoyed your first day of school. Get ready for an exciting and fun-filled year. Tomorrow, we will label the tabs in your accordian and organizational binder. I will be teaching you how to use these new tools. Don't forget to wear covered shoes for P.E. in the afternoon.

I will be posting your daily assignments on this weblog page. If you have a question, click on the words "comments" and type your message. Don't forget to write Dear Mrs. Dela Cruz (in the beginning of your message) and end with your name. I will review all messages before I post them on the blog. So, if you don't see your message after you have pressed the "post comment" button, don't worry. It will show up on my blog after I have answered your question at 7:30 p.m.

These are your assignments for today:
I. Language Arts
a. Reading Log: read a minimum of 30 minutes and record the amount of pages read for Monday. Make sure you write the title of the book. At the end of the week, have your parents sign their name next to the total pages read.

a. Communication folder: show parents your folder, including the documents in your accordian file (tab #2). Have your parents complete the following documents and return it in your communication folder on Wednesday:
